Peer tutors make up a critical part of student success at Oberlin. Peer tutors are content specialists for individual classes, and assist tutees by helping them identify what they already understand, and then clarifying concepts, resolving areas of confusion, and strengthening tutees’ grasp of the course material. The role of the peer tutor is to help students develop strategies to be successful in their classes by modeling study techniques and attitudes in a supportive environment.
Peer tutors will participate in a required, paid orientation session to learn about effective tutoring strategies, learning styles, and communication techniques; tutors will have the opportunity to attend additional refresher training sessions throughout the semester. Tutors are required to attend all mandatory meetings and to complete all surveys or reports requested by program staff. Tutors will report directly to the Assistant Dean for Academic Support.
